Under the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) NextView agreement, ITT Exelis was selected by DigitalGlobe in September 2003 to build the imaging sensor for its next generation commercial imaging satellite-WorldView-1. The NGA's NextView contract to DigitalGlobe was valued at approximately $500 million. The NGA initiated the NextView program as a partnership with the commercial remote sensing community to fill imagery and geospatial needs for military, intelligence, foreign policy, homeland security and civil users.
Launched on Sept.18, 2007, WorldView-1 provides high-resolution, panchromatic images featuring half-meter resolution imagery.
Exelis built the imaging sensor and system for both satellites under the NextView program-DigitalGlobe's WorldView-1 and GeoEye's GeoEye-1. Additionally, Exelis developed key software components to ensure the quality of imagery for the NextView program. These customized components, built using Exelis leading software technologies, IDL and ENVI, provide tools for calibrating the onboard sensor to deliver images with the proper contrast, for inspecting imagery at the ground station to insure overall image quality, and to format imagery for both commercial and government applications.
