Mechanical Mine Sweeping System
The U.S. Navy and allied navies can defeat moored mines using the Exelis Mechanical Mine Sweeping System. Moored mines are placed underwater with a positively buoyant mine case, held at a predetermined depth beneath the surface by a cable or chain mooring attached to an anchor that rests on the bottom. The Exelis Mechanical Mine Sweeping System severs the mine's mooring chain-cables, causing the mine to float to the surface where it is retrieved and detonated.
The technology has a high-area coverage rate capability to sweep the threat of moored mines in shallow, medium and deep water, thereby protecting shipping lanes and helping to defend territorial waters and continue important trade relationships.
